Biography:
Dr. John H. Kempen is Director of Epidemiology for the Department of Ophthalmology, Massachusetts Eye and Ear/Harvard Medical School. He is a clinician-investigator, with 20 years’ experience as a uveitis subspecialist directly managing immunosuppressive therapy, overseeing all aspects of care for these patients. His research evaluates treatment for ocular inflammatory and infectious diseases, including trachoma, and theglobal epidemiology of eye diseases and blindness. He is Chairman of the Systemic Immunosuppressive Therapy for Eye Diseases (SITE) Cohort Study and Vice-Chairmanof the Multicenter Uveitis Steroid Treatment (MUST) Trial Research Group, which have published many of the key papers supporting use of immunosuppressive therapy for ocular inflammation, and has over 100 named author, original data publications in international peer-reviewed journals. He also is a member of the Vision Loss Expert Group of the Global Burden of Disease Study. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of Ophthalmic Epidemiology, and is an Editorial Board member for the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Ocular Immunology and Inflammation, and the Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infection. He was appointed to the NIH Office of AIDS Research Advisory Council by President Bush, and served from 2004-2008. He is President and Co-Founder of the eyecare organization Sight for Souls, developing self-sustaining comprehensive eye institutes in less-developed countries. Dr. Kempen has been living in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia since August, 2015 implementing the MCM Eye Unit atMyung Sung Christian Medical Center while continuing as a primarily internationally-based ophthalmology faculty member at Massachusetts Eye and Ear/Harvard MedicalSchool.
