2nd US-Asia Pacific Panel Workshop on Standardization in Ophthalmology

A/Prof Rupesh Agrawal Represents PROTON at the 2nd US-Asia Pacific Panel Workshop on Standardization in Ophthalmology. On November 23, 2024, A/Prof Rupesh Agrawal attended and represented the Programme for Ocular Inflammation & Infection Translational Research (PROTON) at the prestigious 2nd US-Asia Pacific Panel Workshop on Standardization of Methodology in Ophthalmology, held at the Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre.

This workshop brought together ophthalmologists, researchers, and AI specialists from the United States and the Asia Pacific region to build a collaborative platform for advancing research and healthcare. The workshop focused on standardizing methodology and disease definitions, developing ground truth data, and integrating AI models within local healthcare systems. Through interactive discussions, presentations, and panel sessions, participants addressed key challenges and explored innovative solutions to promote data harmonization and image standardization.

A/Prof Agrawal delivered a compelling talk on "A Case Study of OHDSI in the Program for Ocular Inflammation and Infection Translational Research (PROTON)," showcasing the program’s contributions to data standardization and its impact on advancing ophthalmological research and patient care. Dr. Sharon Fekrat's Visit

On July 29, 2024, we had the honor of welcoming Dr. Sharon Fekrat, MD, an esteemed ophthalmologist and professor of ophthalmology at Duke University and Duke Health, to the PROTON Lecture Series. Her lecture, titled "Introduction to iMIND Research Study,"

took place at Novena HQ, Seminar Room, Level 2, Singapore, and was also accessible online via Zoom.

Dr. Fekrat shared her groundbreaking work on the iMIND research initiative, providing invaluable insights into retinal imaging and its potential to advance dementia research. Her collaborative spirit and expertise inspired all participants, highlighting

the power of teamwork in driving innovation and productivity. Special thanks to A/Prof Rupesh Agrawal and the PROTON Research Program team for hosting this impactful session, as well as to our partners at NHG Eye Institute and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine for their support. With many papers already published and exciting research in progress, the iMIND study is undoubtedly a project to watch!

Ocular Imaging in Uveitis - From Shadows to Clarity

This event, held in collaboration with IOIS, the Foster Ocular Immunology Society, and ZEISS, focused on key topics such as advanced imaging techniques, current challenges in the field, the integration of artificial intelligence, and practical applications in managing uveitis. Participants appreciated the depth of discussions and the opportunity to explore cutting-edge advancements in ocular imaging. Ocular Toxoplasmosis Workshop - Towards a Common Data Model

On November 19, 2024, the Programme for Ocular Inflammation & Infection Translational Research (PROTON)hosted a successful workshop titled "Ocular Toxoplasmosis: Towards a Common Data Model" at the Center for Healthcare Innovation (L7-003).

The event brought together leading experts, including Dr. Alejandra de-la-Torre (Colombia), Dr. Daniel Vasconcelos-Santos (Brazil), and Dr. Bala Murugan (India), to discuss clinical management, immunological insights, and the latest advancements in ocular toxoplasmosis treatment. Through collaborative discussions, the workshop aimed to establish a unified common data model to improve research consistency and enhance patient care outcomes. This initiative was highly appreciated for fostering international collaboration and paving the way for future research standardization. PROTON Members Shine at INFLAMMATIO 2024

From November 20-21, 2024, members of the Programme for Ocular Inflammation & Infection Translational Research (PROTON) actively participated in the prestigious INFLAMMATIO 2024 conference, held at the Singapore General Hospital. Jointly organized by the International Uveitis

Study Group (IUSG) and the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC), this event brought together global experts to share insights and foster advancements in Uveitis research and management. Highlights of PROTON's Participation: A/Prof Rupesh Agrawal served as a moderator in key sessions, including “Delving Deeper into Imaging,” which featured discussions on AI in Uveitis, OCT Choroidal Enhancements, and other cutting-edge topics. He also played a prominent role in several panel discussions. Wei Xin, along with Carlos Cifuentes-Gonzalez and William Rojas-Carabali, represented PROTON in the Rapid Fire Session, presenting impactful research on novel imaging and diagnostic approaches. Several members of the PROTON Steering Committee and Advisory Board played integral roles in the conference as speakers, organizers, and attendees, further strengthening PROTON’s leadership in the field. Key Sessions: Unlocking Uveitis: Integrating Imaging into Clinical Practice: This included live surgical demonstrations and focused workshops on imaging techniques. Multimodal Imaging in Uveitis (MUV): PROTON members contributed to the development of global imaging criteria through panel discussions and validation exercises, aiming to standardize diagnostic practices. This event underscored PROTON’s unwavering commitment to advancing ocular health research and fostering international collaboration. The active involvement of PROTON members in INFLAMMATIO 2024 highlights the program’s significant contributions to the global ophthalmology community. Research Fellows Represent PROTON at Baxter Lab, UCSD

Our research fellows, Carlos Cifuentes-González and William Rojas-Carabali, recently represented the Programme for Ocular Inflammation & Infection Translational Research (PROTON) during a visit to the Baxter Lab at University of California – San Diego (UCSD).

The visit provided an excellent opportunity to learn firsthand about the lab's groundbreaking research in ophthalmology and informatics. Under the leadership of Dr. Sally Baxter, the team showcased their innovative approach to advancing health information technology, driving significant improvements in glaucoma management and overall vision health. A highlight of the visit was a virtual talk by Dr. Rupesh, who joined online to present the vision and mission of PROTON. His insights highlighted the program's innovative efforts in advancing research in uveitis. A special thanks to Dr. Sally Baxter and her team for their hospitality and for sharing such inspiring work.
